The Inverted LEGO®
Lego has always been a constant childhood favourite. From, my first set, a 744 yellow truck from 1980 (universal building set with motor), all the way to exploring current pieces.
As a design student, one looks at things differently. Every object and mechanism is built from pieces just like building blocks. This reminded me of Lego.
I wanted to study literal building blocks and see how a basic brick can transform into magnificent, towering mechanisms. I put myself through the challenge of recreating a 4x2 piece to see its detail and technicalities and understand how it transformed to having created an over 9 billion dollar brand.

I continued to push myself by asking, what can I do on my own to add to such a huge collection of over 12,000 bricks? Thus, the design of the inverse brick was created. After months of trial and error, I was able to make an almost perfect brick.
I don’t look at it as just a brick which could possibly be added to the collection but as proof of my progress in discovering the intricate world of Lego. It helped
me view the perspective a designer in the company may have when thinking creatively. I understood how a brick can come to life before being mass-produced in the moulding factory. I also used this process to push myself as a 3D designer and learn new skills when it came to creating detailed objects from scratch.
